On the B4 (type 8A) cars with the fold-down rear seats, it's possible to
do that, but pre-1993 models (in the US) are based on the B3 (type 89)
platform, and there is a metal "firewall" and fuel tank between the
rear seatback and the trunk/boot.
You can still try to remove the seatback and rear shelf, and then
work through the speaker holes. A job more suited for the limber
with good dexterity, and probably requires the use of various
home-made tools.
On cars equipped with the ski-sack passthrough (behind the rear
arm-rest), that may be a better avenue for reaching the lock mechanism
after removing the bag.
