I had similar happen to my 93 80q luckily I was able to pull the rear seats
down slide into the boot / trunk and reapair it from there. A container of
sand had spilt in my boot and had clogged up the lock mechanism. I found
that it was a simply case of popping the boot open (by opening the lock
cover and pulling the foot long rod that connects to the lock mechanism)
cleaning out the sand and reseting the rod that connects the lock to the
actual mechanism. The rod is metal with an adjusting plastic sleeve that
you can slide up or down to get the correct setting, you can access it via a
removable plastic panel on the inside of boot lid.
Don't try to fix the plastic sleeve in place I think it's a major security
feature for the boot lock and prevents anyone opening the boot by forcing
the lock if the plastic sleeve slips about you can get a replacement (which
is a doddle to fit). It may take a couple of attempts to get a correct
setting but it's cheaper than paying a mechanic.
Hope this helps
