I'm sure you're right. I can not say that I've actually looked at
the hoses in question.
I can tell you that the hoses at the local Shell station (Columbus, OH)
seem a bit short to me. On those occasions that I have to pull up
to the pump with the filler tube on the wrong side, they usually
barely reach. If I don't pull up really close to the pump and park
it with the fill tube directly across from the pump, it might not
reach.
Maybe it's not the fault of the pump.
My A6 is probably just too wide. I'm sure if I was driving
a Fiat Panda it wouldn't be a problem at all :-)
