Phantom Lifter Noise

Thanks for the responses so far

to fill in the details...
running 15w40 Mobil 1 synthetic
Bosch(?) i think, filter

oil level was 1/8" below full when the loud lifters occured
(i later topped it up higher, but after the bad sounds had stopped)

the clatter started before any autocross runs occured, and once started
were unaffected by continuous idling, holding the engine at 3000-3500 rpm
for up to 30 seconds in an attempt to build oil pressure (if that was the
problem), nor successive autocross runs (relatively high rpm/load).  The
only thing that got the problem to stop was leaving the parking lot....as
soon as i started it to leave, the car was quiet after being loud for the
intermittent runs over the previous 6 hours.
