I just put a set on my 4kq a few weeks ago. I did not use any special
adaptor. The lights are mounted by four bolts. Two on the top and two
on the bottom. If you finesse the bottom bracket some with pliers you
can reuse it for the H1/H4 units. I found I had to spread the mounting
ears slightly and move them forward. I also trimmed one side of one of
the ears with a dremel. On the top side one of the holes matches up
perfectly. The other requires some sort of right angle bracket, but for
now I just left mine with nothing. Even with only 3 fastening points
the lights don't budge even if I push on them hard. More importantly
they don't bounce around on a bumpy road either.
As for the wiring I made my own harness that plugs straight into the
intermediate plug for the original lights. I put the power for the park
lights into the city light bulb. I just pluged one side of the two pin
existing connector into the city connector and then made a sort section
of jumper wire with spade fittings on the end to run the other pin
around. Worked quite well.
I wish I had done this last winter when it was dark all the time. Now I
am almost never out after dark with it light until almost 9pm. I am a
little disappointed with the low beam compared to the rectangular H4
units I used to run in my Rabbit GTI, but the high beams are amazing.
The mechanical mounting did take a lot less time than the wiring.
Actually for the first few days I just wired up the H4 direct to the
factory 9004 wiring (or is it 9007 never can remember) and left the H1s
alone. As I said above I was not driving at night, but state law says
we have to have them if the wipers are on and it just will not stop raining.
