I hadn't been following this thread carefully, but those type 81/85
(4000/Coupe/UrQ) owners with the early (under-dash) fuse relay panels
may be interested to know that there had been a VW/Audi recall many
years ago to bypass the fuel pump circuit from the fuse relay panel
and relocate the fuel pump relay to an outboard position. The wiring
inside the fuse/relay panel for the fuel pump circuit is insufficiently
rated to handle the current, and was causing voltage drops and
fuse/relay panel failures.
If your fuel pump relay is still plugged in directly to the fuse/relay
panel, then the recall work has not been performed. I don't know
whether Audi will still honor that recall because it was over 20 years
ago (and whether the relay relocation wiring kit is still available).
You can make your own such wiring kit, however. Those who need more
information can contact me offline.
P.S. This same recall also applied to all CIS-equipped VWs with the
same fuse relay panel (late 70s and early 80s Rabbit and Scirocco).
