The amount of refrigerant has little to do with the working pressures.
A properly charged R134 system (which on a conversion is typically 80%
of the R12 charge) will run higher high side pressures. This is due to
the pressure temperature relationship of R134, which is different than
R12.
I too have seen a broken rod on a york compressor, in a vw quantum with
a r134a conversion.
