944 / V8 diff in CGT?

Elliot,

1. The 944 OE, a multi-disc ZF LSD, is a direct fit, but normally cost $$$,
and require maintenance in a race situation.

2. Quaife is another option, no maitenance, but not as good.

3. I'm about to try the Phantom Grip. If they ever send my differential back
(they offer to install it for me and for free). This is cheap, but I've seen
mixed reviews, but for the $300's range, I decided to give it a shot.

4. The rear differential from a V8 works, as long as you use a V8 pair of half
shafts with the outer tip machined to fit the CGT outer CV. You need to
shorten it and machine the splines. This is actually my plan B. If the Phantom
Grip works, that's great! If not, I have a V8 rear clip that I'm going to try
this cut-and-paste.

The best option, IMHO, is the #1 (944 LSD), it's a multi-disc where you can
assemble a set of discs to obtain different LSD percentage, from a low 25% to
I believe a 60% max(don't quote me on the exact number, but it's the correct
ballpark).

I honestly would not weld a differential in a FWD. I know that several people
do, but the Golf I drove with a welded one was a nightmare up to medium speeds
in a grip surface. This is good in a RWD.

I hope it helps,

Carlos
