I'm surprised someone else on this group hasn't heard how this scam works.
It has been covered in media for months. The scammer "overpays" you with a
cashier's check and you "refund" the overpayment to them.....
Everyone thinks that a cashier's check is gold - but it is NOT. The trick
with the scams discussed is that they mail you a fake cashier's check. You
take it to the bank which accepts it. You then assume you actually have the
money. The bank will tell you that you have the money. They will swear that
a cashier's check is valid, and that you have nothing to worry about. Don't
believe a word they say; it is NOT true.
YOU DO NOT have the money when the cashier's check is bad, regardless of
what the bank tells you. It takes 7-10 days for the check to actually be
processed, at which time it will come up bad. After this, the bank will
apologize and do nothing for you at all. You will have no recourse.
In the meantime, YOU have sent good money to the scammer. You are then out
the amount you sent. And since you have a bad cashier's check from an
overseas fly by nighter, you are 100%, platinum-plated STUCK.
