Brett:
Loose cap on the reservoir would allow fluid to leak out under system
pressure (or your spirited driving) as you seem to allude to in the 5000
example.

Although I ask if there is some check valve to prevent this.

My guess is that either the brake fluid is compromised by air in the lines
or that a combination of the above AND the Hydraulic pump belt is
loose/glazed
or the Hydraulic pump "J" bolt tension setting is no longer tight.

A lister just wrote about his "J" bolt missing and my Avant had it so loose
and unsecured in the back (M8 nut against a washer) that the pump stopped
turning and the slack coming off the slipping belt was an inch or more
higher
than the pulley itself. This leads to NO Steering and brakes by "bomb"
pressure.

If fact, I'd also look at the Pentosin level too.

I think you have a combination of problems IMHO.
Be it the one's above or the master cylinder if all four are binding.
I really think that snow at the rotors after stiopping the car
isn't the best gauge of determining how hot the rotors are.
and As you'll see in my [previous post I'm no expert in brakes)
But I've never had the Audi brakes I've serviced fail or prematurely wear
out.

Additionally, if you want to use a "power bleeder" I have one locally,
I use ~15 lbs and nearly 3 quarts of DOT 4 as I make sure every inch of line
is completely flushed out. Did my 10v is literally 40 minutes start to
finish.
But a rusted bleeder screw could ruin your parade.

I'm also not sure of the significance of this part of your story:
"As I watch, the car(ebrake off, tranny in
>1st) creaks a little and rolls backwards slightly. Does this again a
>few seconds later."
It tells me your on an incline but the car in first doen't tell me
what your trying to do. Cars on "Parked" on hills in gear can do what you
describe,
which would tell me to add (put on)the e-brake or "chock" the wheels against
the curb so its there when you return.
