Agree with Kneale here, most spontaneous gas leaks (no work done to fuel
system lately) in rust belt states are caused by the lines rusting, more
pronounced where they run inside the rubber supports. You might not see
fuel for a long time, but detect the odor because the lines will spring
VERY small pinholes at first. Get under there and yank down on the
lines, chances are you'll spring a big leak at the problem spot. Have a
small pipe cutter, a couple feet of rubber fuel line, small hose clamps
and some twist ties ready just in case. I replaced a 1 foot section on
the 5KS about 3 years ago and it's still holding strong. Make sure and
get high quality FUEL hose clamps (they're usually German, and no open
slots) and fuel rated line. Sounds obvious, but I've been handed vacuum
and coolant hose at chain parts stores after expressly asking for fuel
line.
The gas tank should be inspected from the top through the trunk. Three
philips screws to remove the access port in the trunk.
