IMO, all this stats BS seems to be used to obfuscate matters and overcharge
everybody. In other countries - Austria in this case - a person can have
as many vehicles registered as they can handle financially. Insurance
coverage is paid on ONE, most expensive vehicle only. You get ONE license
plate and put it on the vehicle you take that day - magnets are very
popular. So - one driver - one coverage, following the logic that you can
damage one vehicle only at a time. Something worth to lobby your local
politicians for, IMO. On a side note - I knew some people, who had 2
identical license plates ... older folk with a 60's Buick 2 door, local
driving only.
Insurance rate is based roughly on HP, no vague stats, body type, gender,
age and probability BS. Twelve years ago the highest category was 125+ HP
and cost about 1,300 CAN for a year. I said roughly, so a newer Porsche
costs probably more.
Registration amount (license plate fee) is based on the engine volume and
type (gas or Diesel). For some reason Diesel Reg was cheaper back then,
now in Germany Diesel Reg is about double the gas rate. This way magazine
articles quote various insurance rates (partial and full coverage) and the
reg rate for every new car they review. Maybe they can afford it, because
of getting license at 18 and only after taking driving course and passing
strict tests. Plus, yearly competent tech inspection.
