Can't speak to those failure rates becasue I don't know.
What I *do* know is that running 17psi gauge for 4 years in my 94 Talon
the stock valve has never failed or leaked. Stock boost there is ~12psi
and 2.0 displacement, more boost than I'm likely to run in the wagon.
I've seen/heard of no failures in the 95-99 valve at 13psi or below, but
they open at 13psi and leak even when new- triggerhappy spring choice on
the part of the engineers. (Qualifying: Most 95-99 car owners I know
upgrade to the early design in short order so they can run above 13psi.)
It's possible that the I-5 and/or other cars you mention have bigger
problems with heat and oil vapor in the intake tract thereby increasing
the failure rate- dunno.
If I was to go with something other than the mistu, I'd probably choose a
piston type based on the same comments you saw.
