An air leak does sound to be a likely culprit.  All that engine vibration
and heat, and a marginal hose of rubber piece may have sprung a crack.
In your case, it sounds like the air leak is fairly substantial to cause
the engine to stall, so I would start by inspecting the big rubber boot
that goes from the fuel metering plate to the throttle body, including
its underside, connections to each side as well as to all the hoses
and lines that attach to it.  Then, check all the hoses and lines that are
attached to the intake manifold.
