Sync signals-Adding a timing pin to an NG flywheel on the car?

Hey guys,

Has anyone successfully added a timing pin through the
starter hole or something? I know people repair them
like this. I figure I can drill the hole, then put
the pin in and put a little weld on it. I'll get
access either through the starter hole, or if I take
the transmition bracket off, I can at least weld it
there I think. There may be one problem, don't you
have to machine the flywheel a little to get the pin
in the right spot? My goal here is to run my ignition
off a crank trigger. I may put a timing wheel on the
front pulley, but I'd really like to use the starter
ring.

One more question, I could just get the sync signal
from a single window distributer, but I'm doubting it
will be accurate enough given how high the resolution
is with the flywheel teeth. Anyone done this with an
aftermarket ignition?

TIA
