radical transmission surgery

Hi all, looking for your experience & knowledge in swapping an auto trans
INTO a 5ktq.  I'm not planning on doing this, but I happen to have an auto
tranny out of my 84 5kt parts car that I just can't bring myself to throw
out.
I'm thinking that if the 5 spd in my 86 5ktq daily driver ever suffered a
catastrophic permanent failure, could I take out the the propshaft, and
substitute the auto for the 5 spd, just until I locate a suitable
replacement 5 speed?  (making it a FWD autobox) I realize there would be
some linkages to fit, etc, but other than that, would it fit?  would the
axles bolt right up to the auto, or are the flanges located differently?
anyone? anyone?
