I'm having some trouble staying on the Q-list - evidently the mail server
doesn't like my new e-mail address (which *I* didn't change, it was changed
FOR me by Earthlink - thanks fer nuttin . . )

Anyway, for sloppy shifting on 5K series cars as you describe, check two
things - there's a lock bolt on the shifter arm on the tranny which may be
loose, or more probably, the plastic socket on one end or the other of the
shifter link on outside of the tranny has disintegrated. The shifter link
costs about $55 new, I've bought them used for $25. The sockets are not
available separately, and there's an adjustment for correct length - see
the Bentley. Adjust first, then install, No tools are officially needed to
install it - it is supposed to be a press fit, but that's only if your name
is Arnold Swartzenegger. Mortals like us wind up using a screwdriver shank
as a small pry bar, and the sockets pop right over the pivot pins and
shifting is restored.

The transmissions themselves are practically bulletproof.

Mike Arman, still alive and driving Audis here in Florida . . .

various stuff with 2, 3,or 4 wheels, wings, hulls, etc.
