Door Trim, drivers side

Dave

Had the save problem on my CGT. I eventually got tired of the unsightly
duct tape holding the trim flat so the door could open/close. The loose
piece actually came of rather easily; strong but even pressure did the
trick. I approached the remaining strips in the same manner. They were
more stubborn but also yielded without the aid of a heat gun or solvent.
All separated where the trim met the adhesive and not where the adhesive met
the paint. If I had more trim to remove I probably would use moderate heat
to try to loosen it first.

In a recent and timely list discussion, Charlie Smith proclaimed 3M General
Purpose Adhesive Cleaner, part number 051135-08984 to be the sovent of
choice.

I priced out OEM trim and as I recall (No, I haven't bought them yet) the
set of 6 pieces ran about $500. Ouch! I don't know if they come
pre-adheesed or if you have to apply your own stick-um. If I find the part
numbers when I get back at the office on Monday, I'll let you know.

Subject: CGT: Door Trim, drivers side

Argh! Not sure what happened, possibly a love tap in the parking lot. The
front edge of the trim piece on my 87 CGT came a but loose, not knowing this
I opened the door and now the metal strip down the middle is pulled away and
creased. So, how to I remove the whole door trim piece? Is it just glued on.
If so, heat it with a heat gun/hair dryer and pull? Anybody parting our a
later CGT that would have a matching trim peice? The trim is smooth, not
textured like earlier CGTs. Anybody got the part number so if needed I can
order a new one from Audi? Do new ones come with double sided tape already
applied? if not, what is the recomended adhesive? This is TOTALLY not needed
right now, I'm supposed to go aon a 500 mile round trip in the CGT this
coming woeekend and I can only open the drivers door a few inches at this
point...

TIA,
