type 85 breakaway mirror tightening?

Okay, I've been meaning to ask this for a while, and the planets are all aligned so I'm ready.

All the Coupe GT's I've owned have "breakaway" mirrors that are loose.  I assume this is
because the springs that hold them tight are worn.  Someone else had a theory that
something inside that the springs attach to are bent.

Does anyone have any experience with tightening these up?  I guess the spring can either
be replaced or the existing spring could be stretched another coil's worth and a new hook
fashioned out of the last coil.

If this is even possible, do I get to the spring by taking the glass out?  I'm familiar with how
to do that, but don't remember what that part looks like behind it.
