If you have time to do the research, I don't think it matters what
"sort" of shop you go to - you want to go to one that has a good
reputation, some experience with VAG products, and hopefully some wrench
time under quattros as well, if it is one.

Without actually talking to customers, I guess the best rule of thumb is
a local place where you see cars like yours and close relatives (Saab,
Volvo kind of stuff), only ever for a day or three at a time, and while
not too often, repeatedly.

You could go by late in teh day and stalk a customer and ask them about
the place (make sure they know you aren't from the Dept of Homeland
Insecurity).

There are decent AAMCO franchises, I once had an auto tranny swapped at
one, no problem with that. There are good dealers, there are good
independent shops. There are also nightmare variations on all three.

Look at the recommended mechanics page on the audifans.com site; ask the
question again telling us where you live and maybe you'll get a
recommendation from a lister.

And remember, it's not all about money - it's also about a good job done
well the first time, and someone who stands behind their work (so they
do it well)

Good Luck!
