Low-end alternatives of Fram ?

I too had used the PH2870a on all my Audis ('75 Fox, 78 Fox, 83 4K, 85 4K,
86 4K) until my most recent 89 90q. I probably put 500K miles on those
2870's without incident. That said, I switched to the Mann/Mahle filters
with my 90q and have never used fram since.

My parents recently purchased a 99 A6 from a Nissan dealer and the
dealership had done an oil change and used a Fram filter. When I first
drove the car I noticed quite a lot of valve noise when I would revv. the
engine (both stationary and driving). This alarmed me and offered to change
the oil for my Dad, he accepted. We put M1 0w30 with a Mann filter and now
the engine just runs really smooth with no valve noise. Much relief on my
part.

I don't know if the quality has degraded recently. Maybe it has something to
do with the fact that they now have a "high performance" filter so the
normal one just goes downhill?

Anywhoo, I will not use anything but Mann/Mahle in my cars (I wonder if they
make one for a dorF?) from now on. It is just not worth it to save 2 bucks
retail.

Cheers,
Chris Perry

Subject: Low-end alternatives of Fram ?

Hi

I've been following this "evil Fram" thread with
interest.

I recently went to Mann only filters after building my
Audi 90q turbo but prior to this I used Fram
filters(the PH2870A) for years and years on my non
turbo Audi GT and 4000s (also Ford Escort) with no
problems. I somewhat remember Fram filters being
actually "recommended" for 4-cylinder VW applications
in the 'ol VW Porsche magazine (later European Car) in
the late 1980s. Maybe there has been a degradation in
manufacturing quality ?

Anyway, I think I've dodged a bullet with the usage of
Fram filters over the years and probably will not use
them again. But are there any other low-end
alternatives to Fram that have better quality (for non
turbo cars) ?
