Sounds to me like you just replaced the timing belt . . . check that the
bolts holding the lower timing belt cover (6mm) are tight - but not too
tight, because they *can* be stripped. And they can be interchanged, they
are not all the same length.

Doubtful the car has only 35K on it - the odometers on type 44 Audis (also
known as type $$ here on the list) are known for giving up at low mileages.
I have a 1986 5000, for instance, that has only 41,000 miles indicated.
When I renew the plates, the DMV always asks "Don't you drive it?" (I love
jerking them around.)

35K or 350K doesn't seem to matter - many, many listers are well over
200,000 miles on their 5 cyl Audis, and they run fine, strong, healthy, and
don't burn oil. These engines simply do NOT seem to break. We won't talk
about the rest of the car . . .

The bolts I'm talking about are long 6mm's, they hold on the lower timing
belt cover. One or two of them go into an oil passage (clever design!), and
if they are swapped around, you'll get leaks as you describe. Crank front
seal is nothing special, so I doubt the leak is from there.

You don't need to worry about the oil pump - I have never seen a bad one,
and don't ever recall even hearing about a bad one on this list, whatzit
been, seven years now?

Best Regards,
