Hello all,
First off, a big thanks to Dan and Brett for getting the list back up and running. I know I don't realize how much you miss it until it's gone.
Second off, the other good part about them getting the list set up with the new format, is that I'm now actually able to resubscribe. I've been relegated to reading the archives for the past few months, as I couldn't get the system to set me up again.
And now for the question:
Since I was last on the list, I've bought another 86' 4kq and an 87' 5tcstq.
I've been chasing down a problem with the 5ktq, and I'm about at the end of my rope. The symptoms are as follows:
Car is a bit slow to start (compared to the other 5cyl's) but runs perfect after starting for about 30 seconds.
When it switches to closed loop operation after 30 sec, it starts to run rough. From the engine bay, everything pretty much sounds normal, but from the tailpipe, it has a substantial wandering miss.
When the engine misses, the idle will fluctuate, as the car seems to try to overcompensate for the miss. I can sit in the driver's seat, and watch the idle fluctuate 100 rpm or so.
I also notice the car stumble quite badly until the engine warms up if I start driving, and my overall mileage is pretty poor.
If I disconnect the oxygen sensor (new, by the way) the idle stops fluctuating, and the car runs better, but the miss is still there.
So far, I've replaced the plugs, wires, cap and rotor, michelin man hose, oxygen sensor, and the fuel injector seals. When I had the fuel injectors out, I cleaned them with alcohol and an ultrasonic cleaner. Don't know how much good it did, but the car starts much quicker sometimes-but not always. I've also replaced several vacuum hoses that were suspect.
Car boosts fairly well, I usually hit 4-5 psi on the gauge (separate, not in-dash), and I verified with a mightyvac that the wastegate was not torn. I also checked the timing, and found that the timing belt was off by a tooth (repaired).
Anyone have any ideas? I'm going nuts trying to figure this out.
Oh, and while I'm at it.... Anyone trying to unload any boge tg's, bilsteins, or H&R springs for a 5ktq?
Thanks!
