200 Turbo Quattro oil leak condition

I've seen 2 bad i-5 oil pumps, but yes, they are very rare.

Both had the aluminum housings craked. One was cracked due to the car
taking a farily decent punch in the nose by another car. That one spewed
oil right out the front of the motor. The other cracked so that the high
pressure side wound up sending oil back to the low pressure side.

The internally cracked one really didn't have too bad of oil pressure and
the car probably ran that way for quite a long time without problem, these
gear pumps can definitely put out the volume and pressure.
