the info that the NOx is likely related to the Oxygen Sensor. I replaced
both the oxygen sensor (had not replaced it for 186000 miles, but
don't know if it was bad), and the catalytic converter (at Midas - they
said the one I had was "empty" - nothing in it! Must have broken apart...)

Both these repairs came to around $500, which is what my limit was,
and now I'm home free, it passed the new enhanced MA emissions test!

Just in case people in the NorthEast US are interested - if you can
make the trip upto Montreal, you can find repair shops and even
some Audi dealers that are ready to repair cars at no notice.
Right now things here are so bad it is impossible to get a dealer
or a garage to schedule any appointment for days (usually takes
4-7 days before you can get anyone to look, and they want you to keep
the car for the whole day even for minor stuff). In MTL, Non-dealer shops
are many, and they offer good repairs, I think better than similar
US shops, at certainly good prices (dealer prices, though, are same
as in the US).
Montreal is a cool place!
