4kq runs rough when cold

Hey Guys need some input.
1986 4000 S quattro, 5 cyl, non turbo,
Bought the car from a VW dealer as traded, did my own tune up (wires, plugs,
cap/rotor, fluids), noticed the full throttle switch was wired shut (switch
making contact). Took it in to them as I had no idea what to do. They spent a
good day looking at it, changed the air filter (which I couldn't wrestle out)
and came up with nothing. I needed the car for the weekend and was to arrange
to bring it back-work order left open. The dealer is now closed (bankrupt), so
I am in the cold as too what is wrong with my car! (but never had to pay
either). So here it is

1.Starts fine, hot or cold, cranks and fires rigth away
2.After running a few seconds it will start to miss (idle)
3.After running a couple minutes it will stall (idle)
4.If I try to drive it will buck and miss and be a really difficult to get up
to highway speed
5.After running 15 minutes it will run like a champ, then once in a while miss
fire

I have unplugged various sensors and switches but cannot fool it. It will
however run quite well when the full throttle shut is making contact (running
rich). I do not want to take it in again elsewhere and have to pay for
diagnostics when most of it was already checked. I do know the oxygen sensor
is toast. Any recommendations?
Thanks
Greg
