5KCSTQ - clunk in my rear :-) help please

Folks,
I've had a horrible clunk in the left rear corner ever since I have owned the
car.  I have replaced the transverse link, replaced the wheel bearing and the
inboard trapeziodal bushing.  Still clunks.
The clunk occurs going over bumps and is worse under acceleration.  
I think I'm left with two possibilities: 1. the axle 2. the diff mounts.
I've noticed that if I move the axle by hand it has a bit of a metal clunk to
it when it reaches the end of its play and the other side doesn't.  How much
work is it to replace the axle - does it come with the joints?  Would you
concur that this is the next step?  Any ideas on cost?
