opinion, there were 4000 S (front wheel drive 4cyl manual or auto), 4000 CS
(sold in Canada only 5cyl 110 HP auto only) 4000 S quattro (5cyl 115 HP Man
AWD up to mid 86) 4000 CS quattro (same as last car different name plate body
colored mirrors sport seats) 5000 S (fwd non-turbo only) 5000 CS (front wheel
drive sports package and probably luxury package like 10 speaker audio
systems and Alacantra leather (sued like) seats). 5000 S quattro (AWD
non-turbo only), 5000 CS (fwd turbo same as non-turbo counter part with ABS
different dash maybe), 5000 CS quattro (turbo only AWD same as fwd counter
part except addition of quattro AWD), 100 non turbo 88-91, 200 turbo 88-91,
(quattro can be found on either). 80 88-91, 90 88-91 (later models had 20v
motors on quattro's) but no S CS or any other name additions on all cars sold
in US 88-91 quattro AWD available on all models. 92 100 CS (the designation
returns but there is no S model only CS sold in USA), 92 90 S (standard
edition car fwd V6 quattro is available on S models) 93-94 90 CS (still front
wheel drive same as 90 S but once again has the sports package, Automatic
climate control, upgraded interior trim, quattro is still an option). 94
looks like CS was just an upgrade from S and it looks that way in 86 too. I
would say this is similar to Volkswagens models GL almost always being base,
GLS, Carat, Wolfsburg Ed almost always being mid level, GTi, GLi, GLX, Sport
almost always being top level for their cars. The difference is Audi only
sold up level cars in the states therefore only had two trim levels on it's
cars sold here (not counting S models of the same cars). Just a view from my
stand point sorry for the rant.
