stock motors...) your 80Q *should* pull better than your 4kq, not hugely
better, but its only disadvantage, slightly more weight, is not a big
one.
My suspicion is that the 80Q/NG in question could use a little more than
toluene. Like new injectors, perhaps, or a good overall tune up (plugs,
points (oops!), cap and rotor, air filter, etc.) and checking of
measurable parameters (timing, secondary ignition wire resistances, CPA
current at idle, etc, etc). Clean the underhood connections, check the
temp senders, stuff like that.
It may have been tuned to get around an air leak or deferred
maintenance, which it may still have, or may have then been fixed and
now it is tuned "wrong." I'm leaning towards things like that.
Also, of course, many people prefer the "driviness" of the older, boxier
cars to the milder mannered type 89. This will affect perceptions of
quickness and handling even when there are not underlying issues.
