the condenser, along with the relief valve. One is a safety switch that will
cut-out the compressor. The other says "high pressure fan switch" which, I
presume, kicks in the radiator fan. The low-side probably has a thermostat
device which cycles the compressor based on evaporator surface temperature.
Try jumpering the high side switch and see if the system works (with the
compressor connected normally). This will tell you if it is overpressure
that is causing your problem (assuming the switch is o.k.).
Other things than overcharge will cause high pressure: Air in system, other
contaminants, Insufficient cooling of the condenser (dirty, fan not
working...). If the problems not high pressure cutout, then try jumping out
the low-side (evaporator) thermostat (don't ask me where the electrical
connector for this is. Maybe another lister can help). And see if maybe your
problem is there.
Did you ever think of investing in a set of A/C gages? The cheapies from
harbor freight or JC Whitney work ok. I got a r12/r134 combination set I
like a lot from www.ACkits.com.
Incidentally, once you do get it going, you may want to adjust that t-stat
(see the knowledge base).
