Cannot remove O2 sensor *

They can be difficult to remove . . . . impossible sometimes.
I have a new catalytic converter in my car(88 Audi 5k) because I could not
remove the Oxygen sensor from the old cat.
I believe the oxygen sensor takes a 22 mm wrench. You can try a pipe over
the wrench for more leverage.
The basic problem is getting leverage. The sensor is in a tight spot.
You cannot use an impact wrench because the long extension required just
causes tool twisting and no effect on the sensor.
Try this:
1. Cut off the cat holding bolts on both ends. Sawzall does quick work, or
Dremel cut off wheel.
2. Mount the cat upside down. The sensor will be on the bottom and you have
easy access. Why not just take the cat to the bench and work there? No
leverage . . hard to hold the cat in place without damaging it.
3. Try removing the sensor now with a pipe over the end of the wrench.
Note: use stainless steel bolts/nuts/washers for mounting hardware. Makes
life easier in the future.
If the sensor is old . . the wrench will be a loose fit and its possible to
round off the sensor edges. Then you are in deep doo doo.
I tried using a "sensor removal socket" . .that did not work. I never tried
it with an impact wrench though.
Using an impact wrench sounds good . . .. if you can find a deep enough
socket. I have a deep socket and it wont fit over the sensor . . .it hangs
up internally on the sensor shoulder. I suppose you can cut off the sensor
top with a sawzall. I think I attempted that with no success. Hard material.
I tried heat and Max Blaster to no avail. The cat is still sitting in my
garage . . .laughing at my futile attempts.
Someone else on the list may have a trade secret on O2 sensor removal.
Put high temperature anti seize compound on the new sensor threads before
installing it.
