... where's the transfer case in a 4kQ??? ;-)

While I've never had to replace this boot ... if I did I think I'd try
accessing it from the passenger compartment. Disconnect the linkage rod
from the bottom of the shifter, slide the old boot off the linkage ... slide
the new one back on in its place (being careful not to cut the boot on the
sharp parts of the end where the linkage attaches to the shifter) ... and
then reassemble. I suspect that it may simplify things if you removed the
shifter completely ... just be sure to make scratch marks between the
console base and the shifter so that you can return the shifter to the
proper alignment when reinstalling ...

... and if things don't make it from inside the car you can always do it
from outside. The linkage attaches to the *transaxle* at two points, one at
the selector rod into the tranny and the other is a reference linkage that
clips into a ball and socket joint at the top of the bellhousing. You might
want to think about going this way anyway ... if your boot is deteriorated,
then the plastic sockets in the shift linkage may be in bad shape too ...
and there's always that loose ball in the linkage arem at the tranny end ...
but you'll really have to squeeze your hand up in there to get at the boot!
