This hot splice... it could either be because there was a huge resistance
in the wire here and or because there was only a small resistance (from the
corrosion, as you say), but somewhere further down the wire, on the other
side of the splice from the alternator, there may be an intermittent short
to the chassis. Perhaps you should check this whole cable from the splice
to the battery. I wouldn't have thought that the wire would get very hot
unless there was a significant current drain and headlights and A/C
shouldn't really cause it.

On the side of the
splice that leads to the battery there was plenty of green corosion, but
worse is the side leading to the engine compartment. It apears to have
fiberglass insulation on it, but under that insulation is one very burnt up
wire, that was hot when I got to it after the car has been sitting for
30min
so I couldn't immagine what it was like with the car running.
