Question about timing.

Thanks for the advice, I found time today to get this done, I moved
everything out of the way and enlisted my wifes help to find the marks. I
marked the 0 and the 6 and I also have a 12 degree mark. I marked all
those. Then I set the cam to the mark even with the head. I put the belt
back on, It was just 1 tooth off. I then checked the timing, it is about 9
degrees BTDC. I took it for a ride on the Freeway, wow... it is amazing how
much of a difference that it makes. It pulls all the way to 5000-5500 rpm.
When you step on the gas at 65 it gets up and moves, instead of coughing and
not going anywhere.

This is why I didn't undo the timing belt when I did my lifters. It's
almost like doing the whole tb/wp job just for that. I figured, if the
cam seal ended up leaking, I could just do what i skipped the first
time, but it all went together properly. This was
discussed/debated/argued at length a year or so ago on the list, with
Scot Justusson recommending the "leave the camshaft in and tilt it
forward" approach. I tried it, it worked.
So, anyway, what probably happened to you is the the tb was loose enough
on the crank pulley that it did not go back where it started, or at
least, the two pulleys ended up "off" relative to each other.
You really need to find that crank mark. A slow turning of the engine
(big ratchet, coil unplugged), while cleaning and looking carefully,
will turn it up. Obviously it will also be when the #1 cyl is at the
top, so you don't have the search the entire 360 degrees, just a 10-20
degree window or so. Find it, clean it, mark it with a paint pen, and
make sur ethe crnak and cam (and dist) are set right.
Then do as Javad suggested and check your ignition timing.
