Hi Chris,
Well, after thinking about your quandary for a bit, I realized that the
first criterion is "which car is in *better* shape?" Up here in the
rust belt, that is what we look at. Whichever car has less rust, is the
better one, work from there. In other locales cars die for other
reasons - paint bleached off by the sun, etc.
While either car, if chosen, can be rescuscitated with some
understanding and care, I think without seeing them that the '86 makes
more sense. 1. Better wiring. 2. CIS-E works better and is easier to
fix than CIS. 3. Nicer appointments, usually. 4. more 'parts' cars out
there.
You might also consider things like windsheild condition - if one is
good and one is pitted, go with the good one.
Either way, the car you don't use will be a decent parts car for the
other, even though the engine management and body trim is different.
