Ok, my final post on this thread as well..
When I first started getting interesting in 5 cylinder turbo tuning 6-7 years
ago, the upper limit for 10v power was a claimed 230hp, this was by "known
tuners" who figured that if more power was possible the big tuners or Audi
themselves would have done it. In my search for more power than this, I was told
many times that the CIS would never handle it, that the motor just couldn't
breathe that much, etc, etc. Well, they were mostly right about the CIS, but I
can handily say now, after having to go do it myself, that the 10v long block,
flat out of the box, can easily do 400 crank hp with the right induction,
exhaust and management system, and reliably. No way with CIS.
One thing I've learned from my experience tuning turbo I5's and developing
034efi since, is that arbitrary, "known" limits don't usually apply and aren't
usually, worth Sh#*%.
If MTM and other European tuners want to limit themselves to certain hp
levels for criterion they have, then they should continue to do so, but I wouldn't
expect that those tolerances be put on every indivudual in the international
tuning community, its ignorant, shortsighted and a damn shame.
I know the 20v long block can make 500hp with the right tune, it can make
even more with the right fuel octane, and the bottom end should be built up to
meet the power requirements.
Granted, I'm not saying that motors, system parts and management systems
don't have their practical limitations, heck, that's why I build headers and get
rid of MAF sensors, etc, but to say a certain part is only worth so much power
and that it has a hard limit, becuase that's the way MTM or some other tuner
does it, is a rediculous methodology for a solution that needs an engineering
answer, not an inferred one.
I dont' limit myself to what MTM and other tuners have done, what Audi
themselves have done (CIS, Motrinic, etc) and definitely not to what you purport
Mihnea, and I'd appreciate if you wouldn't throw around your assummed and
inferred limits for others to trip over either.
