Same setup (same oil pump etc.) as the NG in that photo.

The front crank seal housing *is* the oil pump, and, as Chris says, you 
*cannot* remove the oil pump without dropping the pan to clear the oil 
pickup tube.

In fact, once when I feared an oil pump gasket leak on my coupe (I know 
it's another engine code, but these things are all built the same way), 
I had to drop the pan to replace it.

I can't speak to that, no experience with VW 4's.
