Hello Thomas. My 87 5ktq had such a problem when the heat shield around
the exhaust pipe got bent just a little by running through deep drifts of
frozen snow and ice. The shield is close to the front of the transmission
and protects the inner front CV joint rubber boot from heat radiating from
the exhaust pipe just as it makes a bend down and back from the engine. I
pried the shield back in place with a long sturdy screwdriver, while
standing under the car while it was on the lift. Use a bright flashlight to
look for it.

some other thoughts.....................can you also feel it in the shift
lever?

...................does a back seat observer notice any difference in this
noise, compared to someone in the front seat?

...................anybody inspected the driveline center support bearing?
