Cleaning coolant overflow tank

Hi Louis --
I wouldn't use CLR in the cooling system because it's very acidic. I believe
the label on the bottle recommends using rubber or vinyl gloves when
handling it. With the Audi's aluminum head, I'd just want to be very careful
with the stuff.
The citric acid is an easier issue. Here's a link from one of the Mercedes
diesel lists that offers some tips on flushing a cooling system with a
citric acid solution. http://cathey.dogear.com/SDLcool.html#acid
Please note that to prep the system for a citric acid flush, MB recommends
flushing the system first with a degreaser solution to clean out any
residual oil. The shadetree crowd at www.mbz.org recommends liquid
dishwashing detergent for that.
All that said, I haven't heard of a lot of scaling up problems in the
coolant jackets of Audi engines. Am I missing something?
Cheers,
