Did something rather dumb

You need to not only pull the cable, but hold the sheath steady, or even 
push it a little, at the same time.

The two release levers are pulled towards each other as the distance 
between the end of the sheath (pushing on the driver side release) and 
the end of the cable (pulling on the passenger side release) gets shorter.
