On a similar note, I found that my IP addresses have been blocked from
sending email to any Road Runner accounts (rr.com). Road Runner, for
some reason, blacklisted a block of IP addresses that includes my static
IP space, even though my mail server does not relay and I do not
send any spam (and there are no other accounts on my hosts that could
be a source of spam). I sent email to the admins at rr.com asking
them to take me off the blacklist, and also sent a request to my ISP
(speakeasy.net) asking them to work with rr.com to get this resolved.
Speakeasy has attempted to resolve this but so far it has not been
effective. It appears that rr.com is turning a deaf ear on this;
once you're on their blacklist it's very difficult to get off.
This is all quite frustrating. I have a number of acquaintances who
are customers of rr.com and I now could no longer send them email.
This is just as annoying as receiving spam. Global blacklists serve
a double edged sword, it blocks legitimate email just as much as it
attempts to stop spam.
Blacklists should only be used as one of the factors in an overall
scoring system to determine whether a given email is spam, rather than
the sole factor. Other aspects of the mail should also be taken into
account. I use spamassassin ( http://spamassassin.org ) as my personal
email spam filter, and it is much more intelligent. Less heavy-handed
and probably much more effective as well.
