BuMWipers.
I was once a car pool manager in Germany. Early 1980s. 50 Audi 80s, 30 Passats, 2 Golf GTis,
one 7-er BMW, two 5-er BMWs, one 323i, one DB 500 SEL.
The BMWs were more trouble than everything else put together and then some. The 323i had FIVE
gearboxes in eight months - it was off the road more than it was on it.
Both GTis had the same fault on the same day (a Sunday) in the same type of countryside and in
the same weather. The cable from the alternator to the battery fell out of the crimp at the
battery end in the dark and pissing rain high in the hills in central Germany - one was near
Wespersbrunn in north Bavaria and the other up in the Taunus.
Both 5-er BMWs exited in the same way - spun off traffic islands in the wet. One in Hannover,
one at the Frankfurt Sudkreuz.
All of the Audi 80s and the Passats went the distance - 90k km was the leasing threshold. One
Audi 80 had a driveshaft replaced.
The 7-er BMW was written off - a disgruntled employee sprayed DoT3 brake fluid over it one
Friday and it wasn't discovered until after the weekend.
The DB 500 SEL was the most problem-free - Mercedes used to pick it up for service in an
air-conditioned air-suspension truck and deliver it back PERFECT. It came back immaculate
every time. They left a courtesy car, just in case. It cost $$$$ but the driver was our star
salesman - over half our annual revenue in a company of 120+ employees - so no one minded at
all.
