No idea quite yet. If I can get enough weight off of this stock MC flywheel
without it shatering on me, then no custom ones. Cast iron won't break
nicely, when it breaks it shaters like glass - on a flywheel this can lead
to seriously bad things! Another advantage to the engine forward Quattro
design, at least it wont cut my feet off if it comes apart! If I'm not
satisfied with the weight of the pig of a flywheel once its been on a diet,
then yeah I'm definately going to make some new ones, no clue on cost yet,
but I promise it won't be cheap :-(. Ali may not be the answer, I might go
more/less exotic depending on what I can afford and what I have laying
arround, but I will make it right arround 10lbs for sure. Much lighter and
driveability is severely hampered. Alot of times ali isn't cost effective
because of the methods needed to mate it with a hardened steel clutch
surface.
Update as of today. Starting weight was 25lbs, currently I'm at 21.5lbs just
taking some off the back surface. It's still being worked on, there is
plenty of beef left to cut from the back and still be safe, plus theres some
other spots that I can use. I'm expecting to end up at 15lbs when it's done.
Has anybody ever had a light MC flywheel out there? What's the lightest you
have heard of? It would be great to have something to shoot for so I'm not
milling so blind.
