Mazda was years ahead of it's time, my ole RX2 was an alternate fuel
vehicle, it burned a gallon of oil to every half gallon of gas. Used to
check the gas and filler up with oil.

I have a friend with 1991 RX7 (ridiculously fast and fun), so I don't
think a mid 80's model would be the end of the production run before the
new ones came out.

Mandatory Audi Content: NSU was the first company to produce "viable"
Wankel powered vehicles, NSU was then swallowed up by VW/Audi. When the
Germans abandoned the engine concept because of reliability and sealing
problems , Mazda stepped up to the plate, bought the NSU rights and
know-how, then kept at it for a few decades until they got it right.
