The turbo is even easier than that. There are copper spacers available for
the VW 1.8 16V. Since the V8 has forged pistons, just use the stock bottom
end, and yeeeeeeeeehaaaaaaaaaa.
Or, you could just run low boost on a stock engine, but where's the fun in
that? :)

Yep, the v8 is lighter iirc. Also it sits further back, obviously, so weight
distribution is better.. stick a set of low cr pistons and a couple of
turbos on that baybeeeee, there are a few typ 89's running round Europe with
tt v8's in them producing over 550 bhp iirc. Aftermarket efi is the way
forward, its easier than trying to modify a stock loom, and something like
megasquirt would be more than adequate, if you have money then go to
034efi............

Just to comment, very few GM V8 engines are all aluminum. According to some
sources I have read the Audi V8 is actually lighter than the cast iron block
5 cylinder. I know the LT1 is iron block, but I don't know much about the
LS1. Used to be the only Al GM V8 was a small displacment Buick engine that
also came in Land Rovers for a while.
This however would be older than your I-5.
Like someone else said with all the "other parts" you would probably want to
go with aftermarket fuel injection or find a donar car (or both).
If you settle on something and move forward document it so the rest of us
can experience it.
Good luck.
