I haven't drive either car but my $.02 would be to go for the newer car, the W8 (assuming it is 4Motion; the W8's all came like that, right?). I agree that the W8-6-speed combination would be very unusual, and I have driven a V6 Passat and liked it a LOT. Equipment-wise, they are probably very similar...?
On the 2.7T side, it IS an Audi, for whatever that is worth, the lines are certainly better than the restyled Passat (IMO - I like the previous generation better), and you could always get an extended warranty to mitigate some of the repair concerns...
Guess you could not really go wrong with either. I would probably choose the W8.
Good luck!

Well, a fellow car-lounger over on Fourtitude (I moderate the 4000/CGT forum there)threw a monkey-wrench in the works. I was all hopped up on picking up a leftover 03 Passat W8 6-spd w/ sports suspension. I think I could pick it up for around $25,000 (dealer demo with 5,800 miles). Well, this fellow car-lounger pointed out that Audi is offering 0% financing on all CPO 2001 A6s (the best I could do on the W8 is 2.9%). I did some checking around and a relatively low miles 2001 A6 2.7T quattro 6-spd runs about the same price. I would rather have a 4.2 V8 but you can't get them with a manual tranie in the USA and a stick shift is a MUST for me. I'd love to hear everyones thoughts on which is the beter deal and better car, and why. Advice? Thoughts?
