There is a live enzyme, one brand used to be called "Odor Out" and the
live enzymes mixed with WARM water would eat the bacteria and it would
smell fresh. Used it on many fabrics, don't know how it would work where
you are. The area has to stay moist for several hours for the enzyme to work.
Female cats and male cats can be equally good mousers. I had have a lot of
great cats for getting rodents. Short hairs are best.
My Siamese have been great.

Moth balls are very TOXIC. Get them out of your house and property soon.
The cheapest and most reliable mouse eliminator is having a cat or two.
Two cats keep each other company. When one sleeps the other will stand guard.
Cheers, Cat
p.s. If you get a male cat, get it neutored so that it stays home to eat your mice instead of the neighbors. ;-)
