Shawn,
If the 4K is any thing like my '89 90q (and I believe it is), then the
inserts are pretty straight forward. One difference you will notice
between the Audi and other strut cars is the way the assembled strut
assembly mounts to the body. The Audi uses the top of the strut shaft to
mount the assembly to the car. In other words, when you take the big nut
off the end of the strut and remove it from the car, you will find another
nut on the shaft holding the strut mount on. This second nut, which is
like a gland nut, is down inside the strut mount and is a whole lot easier
to remove if you have the specific tool to get it out. I bought mine from
Blau, but you can get them from a number of sources. On the 4K I'm not
sure if the bottom of the strut unbolts from the upright or if it is all
one piece.
Hope this helps,
Dave.

hey all, I need some real world BTDT on replacing strut inserts on an
87 4000 quattro. I've already got the inserts, and gotten some feed
back off of the VW Vortex and its audi forums (I know some of you are
there as well). Im not about to pay for 5+ hours of labor to do it
(even with my break on prices), but I dont have air tools or a lift
either. My Bentley Manual arrives this week but Im just trying to
gauge if its doable. I've done MANY suspensions on a variety of
different cars, just not an older Audi. Thanks for whatever you can
give me.
Shawn
