You're less likely to break something if you use the tool to hold the crank
pulley while you take off/install the crank bolt. If you hunt long enough
in the archives, you'll find all sort of ways around the tool, but all of
them involve some potential hazard. Since you have to take them off
anyway, it's probably a good ideal to replace the accessory belts too.
Make sure you have TDC on cylinder 1 when you begin. A little white paint
on the flywheel mark makes it easier to find later. First one will take
you longer than subsequent belt replacements.
