Yup, I'd guess it was the hood cable that failed. It's easy to replace. Look
at the latch handle, you should be able to unscrew it. When you've gotten
the hood open, attach the new cable to the old one with duct tape and then
pull the broken handle/cable from the inside of the car. As you pull it
through, the new cable that you've attached to the old will follow along
nicely into the interior. Then you can re-attach the new stuff. Don't close
the hood until you're sure that the new cable is correctly tensioned to
release the hood.
